Did you know that Brookhaven has a Historical Museum located in the middle of downtown? This museum is in the old Jewish Temple that is located on the corner of South Church Street and West Chickasaw Street.
The Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society held its first meeting in February 2008; and right from the start, its founders hoped to create a museum dedicated to area history. At the same time, a group of Jewish families was thinking about ways to preserve the structure and history of the B’nai Sholom Temple, built in 1896. The members of the temple, with the help of the Institute for Southern Jewish Life, decided to combine their interest in preservation with that of the historical society. March 2011, two collections, housed in one building, opened to the public.
The museum is still growing and accepting materials and artifacts. Entrance to the museum is free, but donations are welcome. They are open Tuesday and Thursday 10:00a.m.- 2:00p.m.
